Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

 Who is eligible to apply?

Graduating high school seniors from the East End of Houston.  Students from the Stephen F. Austin, Milby, Cesar Chavez, East Early College High School, Eastwood Academy, and YES Prep East End, are eligible to submit an application packet.

- Graduating high school seniors from the East End area who have not received significant funding for their first year of college.  

- Graduating high school seniors from the East End who are entering their first year of college or vocational school.

- Graduating high school seniors from the East End who have at least a 2.5 GPA.


What are the application requirements?

A Completed Application Packet, sent as ONE EMAIL, with your first and last name in the Email subject line, to include:

  1.         Application Form (included on this website).
  2.         One page Essay stating why you are applying. (Provide any information you think might be helpful to the LFS committee in understanding your goals and your financial assistance needs.)
  3.        One Letter of Recommendation from school staff or a current/past employer.
  4.         High School Transcript including GPA.
  5.         A recent Photo of yourself (to assist the committee's recall)

Virtual interviews will be conducted via ZOOM with qualified applicants on Saturday, June 21, 2025.  Applicants must be available to be interviewed by the committee to be considered.


What are the potential scholarship awards?

Available only for the first year of college or vocational school for tuition, fees, and books.

Award amounts vary depending on the year, but average $2,000 - $4,000.

Number of awards conferred each year vary, but average 10 per year.


Who makes up the LFS interview committee?

While the exact committee members change from year-to-year, they include at least one Lightsey family member and a former recipient; a BakerRipley representative is also invited.


What are the important dates?

Deadline to have all components of  the Application Packet submitted: midnight, Sunday, April 13, 2025.
