The Lightsey Family Scholarship (LFS) has been serving graduating high school seniors from the East End area since 1984. It was founded by Betty and Tom Lightsey, Jr. and the funding for the scholarship continues to come from donations from the family, friends, and past recipients (no corporate money). The Lightsey family grew up in the East End and are now able to help others get started with their first year of college, or vocational, education.
The scholarship’s mission is to offer assistance to those who need financial support with tuition, fees, and books and have no other significant source of funding; have demonstrated a drive to continue their education; and have at least a 2.5 GPA.
Students in the Austin High School, Milby High School, Cesar Chavez High School, East Early College High School, Eastwood Academy, and YES Prep East End are invited to apply. Each year, approximately ten scholarships are awarded, with an average award being $2,000 - $4,000. Recipients have careers as varied as court reporters, mechanics, teachers, engineers, software designers, counselors and lawyers.
The deadline to submit the emailed application materials is midnight Sunday, April 13, 2025. Virtual interviews will be conducted via ZOOM with qualified applicants on Saturday, June 21, 2025. Applicants must be available to be interviewed by the committee to be considered.
The LFS is generously administered by BakerRipley.
